Did you know that Father’s Day was started by a woman? 

Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington was inspired by a  Mother’s Day sermon to honor her father William Jackson Smart for single-handedly raising Dodd and her 5 siblings after their mother died.

The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19th, 1910 on the anniversary of William Jackson Smart’s birthday.

Here are some interesting facts from Hallmark about Father’s Day

-Father's Day is the 4th largest card-sending occasion with about 87 million cards given every year.

-Fifty percent of all Father's Day cards are purchased for fathers and almost 15% for husbands.

-Two top-selling categories are "Dad from Daughter" and "Dad From Both."

-Rose is the official flower for Father's Day. Wearing a red rose signifies a living father, while white one represents deceased father.

 -Greeting cards make up the number one gift item on the occasion of Father's Day

.-It is estimated that more than one-third of the cards sold on Father's Day are funny in nature.

 -Female shoppers spend approximately 50 percent more than men, while buying gifts for their dad.



In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed the permanent law for Father’s Day to be observed on the third Sunday of June.
